About the pool and the environment

The temperature of the pool is set at the levels recommended by the STA (Swimming Teachers Association) and ASA (Amateur Swimming Association, now Swim England), and is usually around 32 degrees centigrade. Warmer than the north sea but not quite as warm as the Indian ocean.

You choose the pace that’s right for you. If you already have an idea of how long it takes to swim 100 metres, we will show you how to calculate an equivalent water flow rate. From there you adjust to make it slower or faster.

2.13m (7ft) x 4.26m (14ft) swimming area  and 1m (39 inches) standard water depth.

No it is not harder to swim in the current as the stroke that you use will be identical to that in a traditional pool. However the water flow in the pool means that you will need to work harder in the current. You will therefore have a more intensive work out session.

Absolutely – in fact we would encourage it! The pool is not just for swimmers wishing to swim and perfect their style, but the combination of a regular depth, the ability to have a gentle current and the privacy of the environment make it perfect for physio / rehabilitation. In fact, we’re so convinced of the broader use of the pool, that we’re currently investigating how Swim in a Tin can participate in the Good Boost project.

Don’t panic, you won’t be flung against the wall! You can either stand up in the water or float to the back of the pool area.

There is a simple remote control to increase / decrease speed on the pool side. If you are swimming with one of the Swim In A Tin coaches, then they will do this for you. If you are on a Pay as you Swim session, are either unsure of how to set the speed or would like some support, then a team member will help.

We have access to the Tin through doors that are wheelchair friendly. However, access to the pool is via 3 steps. If this is a concern then please contact the team at splash@swiminatin.com and ask for a tour of the pool space before you book a session.

Yes, you can bring one non-swimmer to the poolside (excluding instructors).  Please note we have no seating area poolside. We do however have a waiting room with internet facilities, tea, coffee and a clear viewing area of the pool area.

About swim sessions

Yes, absolutely! The controls on the pool are very simple to use and work using a touchpad to either increase the speed, slow it down or stop completely.

You can keep a track of the number of minutes that you have swum at certain speed and from there it’s easy to calculate the distance. Alternatively if you have a smart watch, there are a number of apps that can do this for you.

We take the safety of all Swim in a Tin swimmers extremely seriously. Our coaches are STA trained in life saving techniques, including CPR. In addition, our onsite team members are also first aid trained. We rehearse our emergency operating procedures (EOP) on a regular basis. However, prevention is always the best policy which is why we ask you to complete a medical questionnaire in the first instance. Equally, if you feel unwell then please let a member of the team know and do not enter the pool.

Yes – we have two large private changing rooms in the Tin, both of which have their own private shower.

Each slot lasts for 30 minutes although you are more than welcome to book more than one slot.

We are a small business and are unable to offer trial sessions for free but we can offer shorter sessions for a reduced price. Please contact us at splash@swiminatin.com for more details.

Yes, providing the individual has completed a medical questionnaire. If you would like to transfer a session then please contact us at splash@swiminatin.com.

Yes, although we have no seating area poolside and for safety reasons, we have to restrict the numbers of people poolside to one person. This could be the instructor. We do however have a waiting room with internet facilities, tea, coffee and a clear viewing area of the pool area.

Staff are on site to support Pay as you Swim clients.  All our staff and instructors are DBS checked and we take references. We also monitor the pool area by CCTV for the sole purpose of monitoring pool activity to ensure the safety of our swimmers and staff.

In line with Swim England recommendations, we would encourage the use of mask wearing in the environment and of social distancing. Our team conduct regular lateral flow tests and we clean areas on a regular basis.

Lessons for children can start from the age of 4 as we find that they struggle to concentrate if they are younger. That said, every child is different, so please contact us.

We do not have any creche or childcare facilities at Swim In a Tin and, given that this is a pool environment, must insist that all children are supervised by a responsible adult at all times.

Yes of course, but please give us a call beforehand just so that we know, and please ensure that you complete a medical form.

We love babies and are delighted to have teamed with swim specialists, Waterbabies, to introduce the next generation to the world of swimming. More details are available at https://www.waterbabies.co.uk/classes/warwickshire/swim-tin

No – all our clients, young and old, need to be fully continent. Whilst there are some great products on the market, an ‘accident’ in the pool may need us to close for 24 hours in order to ensure that the water is safe and clean to swim in. The exception is for those swimming with Waterbabies.

Absolutely! Our coaches have a number of children and young people with educational needs, and the Tin provides a wonderful calm environment. We’re really proud that we can provide a safe and friendly space for your child to gain water confidence and learn to swim. Please give us a call or email us at splash@swiminatin.com to find out more or to arrange a session just to have a look around.

About coaching sessions

As we’re only a small pool, we’re unable to offer all the ASA or STA swim awards as we are unable to offer the necessary assessment criteria. For example, one of the basic requirements is to jump into the pool safely which is an absolute ‘do not’ at Swim in a Tin. We can however offer distance awards, and we are busy developing our own criteria that will still chart your child’s achievement, enabling them to show progress, capability and enjoyment of their new found skill.

Yes of course – even adults love a badge and a certificate! Our Founder Helen remembers very vividly the feeling of gaining her 20m badge and certificate, 40 years after her first failed attempt! (and yes, she did take it home to show her parents!)

We want your child to look forward to their lesson, not to fear the prospect of 30 minutes of continuous swimming. Our aim is to build confidence in water, to improve their technique, to gradually build their stamina so that they can determine when they are ready to swim a distance. We mix up swimming practice with activities such as diving for sinky toys, learning to float in different positions and even just having fun in the current.

We teach a style of swimming which is very efficient, creating very little splash as you glide effortlessly through the water. It’s similar to Total Immersion and Swim Smooth and relies on your body being at its optimum buoyancy in the water, reducing stress on the shoulders. If you’ve never swum with us before, be prepared to listen out for swordfish, sharks and may be even a super man glide!

We hate the smell of chlorine on our skin and that stinging sensation around the eyes, so when designing Swim in a Tin we decided to use UV filtering. This uses UV light to kill any bacteria in the pool. While we still need to use a very small amount of chlorine, this will not dry your skin, or cause irritation. We test the pool levels every 4 hours or more to ensure that the ph levels are correct. However, we do ask that everyone showers before entering the pool to help to keep the pool clean.
