I didn’t swim for 40 years which, looking back, was simply crazy. I made excuses – never enough time, too busy with career / kids / business. I was an expert in thinking of all the reasons why I shouldn’t do something.

There was of course only one person I was fooling – myself.

This Girl Can is an amazing initiative to encourage women like me to get up and do something. To ignore those gremlins sitting on our shoulders, whispering in our ears that we should avoid exercise. It’s not for us.

The facts stand out for themselves. Regular swimming can reduce the risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke.

It can also boost your mood and keep your weight under control.

According to Just Swim, swimming is one of the most effective ways to burn calories. A gentle swim can burn over 200 calories in just half an hour, more than double that of walking. And a faster swim would see that chocolate bar gone quicker than if you went running or cycling.

Still not convinced? There are early reports that indicate that swimming can help women maintain bone density post menopause.

At Swim in a Tin, we’re therefore proud to support the This Girl Can initiative to encourage more women to be active. To give women the time and the space to overcome their gremlins, to enjoy the ‘me’ time without feeling guilty. After all, This Girl Did.

Why not come and join us?
